What is a Doula and what do they do?
“A serving woman, a helping woman, a sister”
The word Doula derives from ancient Greek. The word means ‘a serving and helping woman’. A Doula is now often referred to as a pregnancy or birthing coach. Back in the day you had ‘sisters’ to support the birth. In some cultures this is still a very ordinary practice.
A Doula is an experienced and knowledgeable woman who meets you during the pregnancy and listens to your wishes for the birth. A Doula supports you and your partner in emotional but also practical matters during your pregnancy, and even after if that is desired. In case you don’t have a partner, a Doula can assist you in the practical matters where you will need support. Together you can discover your wishes and desires to make your pregnancy and birth a memorable experience.
Should you want something other than the support described in the package above, we can always figure out a custom package together. Our goal is to find out exactly what works for you and to create a comfortable and pleasant experience of support and assistance. I do sometimes work with a back-up Doula to ensure that there is always someone available to assist you when giving birth.
